Becoming a godmother or godfather means:
- Enabling a child to go to school
- Helping a child out of extreme poverty and offering him or her a perspective for the future
- Providing health coverage
- Setting up a solidarity fund to help the whole family in case of emergency
The amount for sponsoring a child who goes to school at the AFE association is 30€ per month, including leisure activities during the school holidays.
This contribution enables the takeover:
- the school fees
- the administrative costs for the official registration of the child, if necessary
- the purchase of school materials such as uniforms, exercise books, pencils…
- the cost of daily breakfast (76% of children in Senegal do not eat breakfast, although this is essential for good concentration)
- health insurance costs (which covers 80% of the child’s treatment costs).
- a solidarity fund that can provide emergency assistance to the child’s family or a child without sponsorship

Why is it important to sponsor a child?
Education is a crucial step in poverty reduction:
A person who is educated will have more general skills and knowledge. In addition, they will have a better understanding of their country and culture, and will realise the importance of having fewer children.
An educated person can also better understand the importance of vaccinations and schooling. Education and general knowledge also opens the doors to employment and reduces the likelihood of migrating to a western country.
School education as an essential engine for a country’s development:
The intellectual development that schooling brings not only results in a significant and lasting improvement in the living conditions of the child and his or her family, but also has a positive impact on the economy, the preservation of the environment, and the health and nutrition of an entire country and its inhabitants.
Essential
<< A child who is educated is more likely to send his or her own children to school. This can help break the persistent intergenerational effects of poverty and inequality and is critical to supporting the development of one’s country. >>

Your questions about sponsorship
1. WHEN I DECIDE TO SPONSOR A CHILD, AM I MAKING A COMMITMENT TO THE CHILD’S ENTIRE SCHOOL LIFE?
NO
There is no time commitment, you can stop the sponsorship at any time you decide. But it is true that sponsoring a child is a long-term process. Ideally, you should accompany your godchild until the end of secondary school or the age of majority.
2. IS IT POSSIBLE TO CHOOSE YOUR GODCHILD, BOY/GIRL?
NO & YES
The AFE association decides on the allocation of the sponsored children. The allocation is made according to urgency, which is determined after a « selection procedure » and a check of the living conditions of the children.
The association can of course respond to your wishes by allocating a boy or a girl.
3. DOES MY GODCHILD REALLY EXIST? IS IT EASY TO HAVE EXCHANGES?
YES
As a godparent, you will have a close relationship with your godchild. You will see how your godchild grows up and develops and thus build up a strong bond with your godchild over time. Your godchild will look forward to exchanging ideas with you and proudly showing you his or her work.
You can wish your godchild a happy birthday and send a gift if you wish. You can even visit your sponsored child and have an exciting and unique time.
AFE is committed to sending you your sponsored child’s school results and keeping you informed about their development at school and in their personal life.
4. CAN MY GODCHILD HAVE SEVERAL GODPARENTS?
NO
Each child can only have one godparent. Therefore, your sponsorship is a very valuable support for your sponsored child, as it makes him or her feel valued. Knowing that someone on the other side of the world cares about them and their future will encourage and motivate the sponsored child more than ever.
5. DOES MY DONATION GO DIRECTLY TO MY GODCHILD?
NO
Your donation will not be given in cash to your godchild, nor to his/her family. The AFE association will receive your donation and will make all the necessary expenses for the child, school purchases, health care and other expenses. All the bills and the school report are given to the sponsor at the end of the school year.
6. CAN I SAVE TAXES BY SPONSORING?
YES
Making a donation in the form of a sponsorship can lead to a tax reduction of 66% for individuals and 60% for companies.
Examples: If the monthly sponsorship is 30€, you get 20€ back from taxes. The sponsorship will only cost you 10€ per month or 120€ for the whole year.
